Overview

During this 3-day workshop, the learner will have the opportunity to practice their health assessment skills.  The workshop is designed to consolidate the pre-course learning for the Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnostics, prepare you for the pre-course OSCE which will be held in 2-3 week of September and give you confidence in your skills for your first clinical experiences. 

You will work in groups of 2-3 persons. The days will begin with a plenary presentation followed by hands on practice.

  • Welcome, overview and General Survey
  • Skin, hair nails assessment 
  • Cardiovascular assessment and practice time

Morning, 0815 - 1230

  • 0815-0830, sign in and coffee
  • MSK assessment
  • Cranial nerves review and assessment of the head, neck, eyes, ears, nose, mouth
  • Practice time

Morning, 0815 - 1245

  • 0815-0830, sign in and coffee
  • Conducting a head to toe exam
  • Practice time
  • Afternoon pre-brief

  • Respiratory assessment and practice (practice respiratory assessment and then practice putting together the skin, CV and respiratory assessment)
  • Abdominal assessment and practice time
  • 1600- End of day 1

  • Neurological assessment
  • Practice time
  • Putting the assessment together
  • 1600- End of Day 2

Afternoon, 1245-1530 

  • Hands on Head to toe exam
  • Debrief and wrap up

Coffee Break provided at 1430 each afternoon

Fee: $300 (13% HST included) ($100/day for individual days).

Course Description

This three-day workshop is designed for current and future students of the Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner program. The focus will be on advanced health assessment and diagnosis. Participants will benefit from the detailed review and hands-on practice of the core elements of a Comprehensive Physical Examination.

Light refreshments will be provided.
